Fraternity Expansion Announcement

Good Afternoon All,

We are excited to announce that the Interfraternity Council at Lehigh University will be moving forward with the expansion of our fraternity community in the fall 2014 semester. The purpose of this expansion effort is to continue the goal of providing a myriad of options within the community to meet the ever changing needs of our undergraduate student population.

The University will be giving priority to those organizations that are fundamentally committed to espousing Jewish culture and heritage. Additional consideration will be given to organizations that have had active chapters on campus in the past.  The relationship with those groups is a valued part of the future of the fraternity community at Lehigh.  However, this will not automatically “disqualify” any organization which submits materials.  Additionally, any fraternity expansion at Lehigh will not include a residential facility, and there will be no plans or timeline in place to convert any newly recognized non-residential chapters to residential chapters.

My name is Tiffany Kuperschmidt and I am the Vice President of Recruitment for the Panhellenic Council! The Panhellenic Council is the governing body for 9 sororities on Lehigh's campus.

As some of you may know, each residence hall is assigned Rho Gammas who are seniors from the different chapters to help you through the recruitment process. Kappa Delta Sorority, the NEW sorority on campus, is holding an information session in the Perella Auditorium in the Rauch Business Center on Campus this Thursday, September 19^th from 7:00 to 8:00 pm! We are inviting all women of the Lehigh community including unaffiliated as well as affiliated women to attend this information session to learn more about Kappa Delta!

 

This is a great opportunity for you to learn more about our recruitment process (Recruitment Weekend is October 3-5), our upcoming chapter establishment and a little about our national organization. An additional question and answer session will also be held at the end!!!

CSO Homework Club Snack Bags

 

 

 

 

 

Get excited!!  We're kicking off the Homework Club Snack Bag initiative again for the fall semester and we need your help to make it a success!!  

WHAT: 

The Community Service Office organizes homework clubs Monday through Thursday for several of our partner schools near campus in south Bethlehem.  Over 90% of the kids in these partnering schools and those participating in homework clubs receive free or reduced lunches, meaning their families live at or below the poverty line.  While these kids receive meals during school hours, food insecurities are a constant concern in the evening hours and, more importantly, on the weekends.   

SO WHAT: 

Some homework club kids do not know when or where their next meal will come from.  Processed foods, junk foods, and fast foods are more affordable than nutritious foods and healthy produce and homework club kids typically have less access to fruits, veggies, etc.  Family members may work long hours in the evenings and weekends as well meaning traditional dinner time is not commonplace for some of our homework club kids.  With this in mind, the Community Service Office provides snacks during homework clubs and two fraternities also prepare a weekly dinner for homework club kids (thanks Sig Ep and DU). It's no coincidence that on the days dinners are served, there is a 100% attendance rate at homework clubs.  HOWEVER, that still leaves the weekends...     

NOW WHAT: 

Back by popular demand, the CSO and fraternities and sororities have partnered to prepare and deliver weekend snack bags for homework club kids.  Chapters have the opportunity to sign up for one Thursday of the semester, prepare 40 snack bags for that date, and deliver them to our Community Service Office on campus.  They'll then be delivered to the homework club kids.  Snack bags should include healthy items such as fruits, veggies, granola, cheese sticks, nuts, etc.  More details on logistics are included in the attachment.  This is a great way to get involved within the local community!!

IFC Fraternity Open Houses

Interfraternity Council (IFC) Open Houses will be taking place this week, Monday, Tuesday
and Wednesday from 5pm-9pm. Over the course of these three days, potential new members (PNMs) will have the chance to meet brothers and tour houses from all 18 Lehigh's IFC fraternities. Open Houses are a great opportunity to see all that Lehigh's fraternity community has to offer and to meet upperclassmen in fraternities.

Men from each first year residence hall will meet with their Brotherhood Recruitment Officer (BRO) in their designated meeting place at 4:30pm on each day and will be taken up on a six house rotation each day. The schedule for tours is as follows:

Scavenger Hunt for St. Jude's Cancer Research Hospital

 

Cancer doesn't sleep, so neither should we!

Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority and other Lehigh student organizations are hosting a late night scavenger hunt to support St. Jude's Cancer Research Hospital. The event will take place on Thursday, October 17th from 10PM to 2AM. There will be live entertainment, food, and fun! All of the proceeds will be donated directly to St. Jude's.

Teams of five will sponsor a current patient for the night and compete in a series of events and challenges for fun prizes. To participate in the event, each team must raise $100 by October 3rd. Come out and support the cause!

Financial Clarity

 

 

Per previous conversations, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs (OFSA) wanted to make sure that you are in the loop as to a decision that was made as part of the 2013-14 System-Wide Assessment Committee (SWAC) recommendations for the upcoming year. As frequently discussed in recent Greek Alumni Council (GAC) meetings and Accreditation presentations and reports, chapter financial clarity has become an integral part of chapter operations. SWAC believes that all stakeholders in the chapter recruitment process need to be provided timely and accurate information as it pertains to joining a Greek organization.

Per SWAC: "Understanding the cost of chapter membership, as well as the transparency of that cost and the variance of costs between chapters allows potential new members to be more informed consumers during the recruitment process. Additionally, chapters will have a more informed reference of costs of other chapters, assisting all organizations in making decisions on keeping costs manageable. Lehigh University will be better equipped to discuss financial obligations with parents and new members. Additionally, OFSA will be able to conduct a more informed conversation with chapters about the high cost of chapter affiliation, and the effect this has on chapter members and new members."

Therefore, OFSA is requesting that this financial information be submitted via e-mail no later than Friday, October 4th, 2013. This information will be broken down and published on the OFSA website, as well as used in discussions during general recruitment convocations and parents webinars. The format for this breakdown is as follows:

a)      Chapter dues

b)      New member dues (due at induction into new member program)

c)      New member dues (due at initiation)

d)     Parlor/house fees

e)      Meal fees  

f)       Social/Brotherhood/Sisterhood event fees.

Kappa Delta Sorority is thrilled to establish the Theta Zeta chapter at Lehigh this fall! Kappa Delta is a national organization with nearly 230,000 initiated members and 149 active chapters. Everything we do as an organization—from new member education to community service—supports our national platform of confidence. We are committed to building confidence and self-esteem in women and girls.

Greek Week Philanthropy Event

Good Evening!!!! 

     Here is some important information regarding the philanthropy event tomorrow! Tomorrow between 4:30-6:30 please meet with your team to gather and collect items based on your district (see attached spreadsheet for ideas) to donate. Points will NOT be based on money spent or amount of items donated (although your donations will be extremely appreciated and helpful), but on effort and connection to local agencies and community members. 

Documenting service hours, reaching out to local agencies, and utilizing other resources is highly encouraged. Purchasing, collecting or gather items based on agency need will benefit your team! 

The attached list gives an idea of items needed by our community, but your creativity is needed! Keep your district in mind, and find fun ways to utilize the Hunger Games theme in your approach. 

Create your own Cornucopia of items and send us your pictures!

Update on Theta Chi Fraternity

Below you will find an update on the conduct status of Theta Chi, stemming from incidents that occurred in the spring 2013 semester. Due to the final outcomes of Theta Chi's conduct hearings occurring after the classed ended, OFSA made the decision to post this information in the beginning of the fall semester, when students were back in session.   On April 24, 2013 the Theta Chi Fraternity, Beta Sigma Chapter, was placed on Disciplinary Deferred Dissolution through December 31, 2013 as a result of two separate conduct cases and an Administrative Hearing.

 
The first disciplinary case resulted in the following charges:
·        Respect for Community due to furnishing false information to a university official

·        Respect for Community due to a failure to comply with the reasonable requests of university officials

·        Respect for Self due to unauthorized or illegal consumption, distribution, or possession of alcohol

 

The incident these charges were related to is described below:

The chapter continued their new member education program past the deadline they submitted to the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs without permission (Respect for Community), and past the deadline outlined by the University for initiation (Respect for Community).During the investigation members and new members admitted that there was alcohol available to new members under 21 years of age at off campus events (Respect for Self).

 

The Hearing Officer found the Beta Sigma chapter responsible for all three violations.

 

 

The second disciplinary case resulted in the following charges:

·        Respect for Others due to actions toward Lehigh community members

·        Respect for Property due to vandalism and intentionally or recklessly interfering with the property of another

·        Respect for Community due to failure to comply with the reasonable requests of university officials

 

The incident these charges are related to is described below:

LUPD was dispatched to Theta Chi for a report of males breaking bottles. When LUPD arrived there was no one on the north side of the house, but several brothers on the south side of the house smoking. The police saw about 5 cases of empty bottles on the grass area and many broken bottles near the concrete septic tank lid. The chapter was cited for disorderly behavior after officers reported that the members were uncooperative.

 

 

The Hearing Officer found the Beta Sigma chapter responsible for all three violations.

 

The alleged incidents and behaviors of members for both conduct cases were incongruent with the values, purpose and objectives of both Theta Chi and Lehigh University.

 

The following sanctions have been imposed:

·        The chapter is placed on Disciplinary Deferred Dissolution effective April 24, 2013 through December 31, 2013. During this period of time, the organization is on notice that any further violations of the Code of Conduct will result in dissolution.

·        Theta Chi Fraternity is placed on disciplinary probation effective January 1, 2014 through May 31, 2014. Disciplinary probation is the conditional continuation of a group or organization for a specified period of time not to exceed four semesters. This status implies that any further violation of this Code of Conduct may result in dissolution, termination, or other authorized sanctions. Other sanctions may be imposed, including limitations on social activities, and additional requirements may be imposed as conditions for reinstatement of recognition in good standing.

 

·        The chapter is required to have alumni representation present at initiation ceremonies during the Spring 2014 semester and provide verification to OFSA that this occurred by signed affidavit. It is to be completed by March 21, 2014.

 

·        The chapter must work with your alumni and national office to develop a written plan outlining the steps the chapter will take to comply with the sanctions and show how the chapter will manage the alcohol free environment. The plan must be signed by all members, the alumni advisor and a representative of the national organization. It is to be completed by September 5, 2013.

 

·        The organization will be alcohol free effective April 24, 2013 through December 31, 2013. The chapter cannot host any events in the house with alcohol and individual members are not permitted to have alcohol in their rooms. The chapter can host non-alcoholic events during this period.

Send at least 10 of your chapter members to the Greek Week Kick-Off  BBQ, check in and pick up your t-shirts. You will receive 50 points for checking in with at least 10 team members.

Wear letters!

There will be food, first come first serve.

We will also be playing games and hanging out! Please take this time to get to know other members of your Greek Week teams. If you have a corn hole set or any type of game, please bring it.

 

Dodgeball

7 PM

Grace Hall

Please choose 7 members of your team to be a part of the dodgeball team. One member from each chapter on the team is necessary.  Minimum of 3 sorority members per team. Teams can rotate throughout the tournament.

There will be 2 courts with a double elimination format. There will be a bracket with 4 teams on each side.

Points: 1^st Place 100 points, 2^nd Place 80 points, 3^rd place 60 points, and 4th place with 40 points

 

Tuesday, September 10th

 

Volleyball

Teams of 7, one member from each chapter is necessary. Minimum of 3 sorority members per team. Teams can rotate throughout the tournament.

Teams will play to 11.  Rally scoring, single elimination.

**Only two members are required to attend per shift, due to limited space. These members can stay for the entire night, or trade shifts at the halfway point**

Two 2 hour shifts, first half hour is training. You will be raising money for your P&E accounts.

No points will be awarded for this event.

 

Please plan to talk about what your chapter has accomplished ( three bullet points), as well as why you might be raising money/what you want to do with the P&E account.

There will be 15 questions revolving around the theme of Teen Films, including Hunger Games.

Thursday, September 12th

 

Hunger Games Relay

Front Lawn

6 teams of 4, one for each relay part (each team of 4 needs at least 1 member from each house)

Pool noodle relay- One pool noodle, between the legs of all four members, the team must run back and forth from one line to another without letting the pool noodle touch the ground.  NO USING HANDS.   If the pool noodle touches the ground, start again.

Chopstick egg carry-  Each member is given 1 chopstick.  The team must carry their egg to the the other side of the field without the egg breaking.  If the egg breaks, start again.  No hands, only chopsticks.

Bucket fill-  Using one sponge, toss the sponge down the line of your team, and fill a bucket to the line.  Once the bucket is filled with water to the line, move to the next event.

Ping pong waiter-  Place a ping pong ball on a plate and run through obstacles keeping the ping pong ball on the plate.  If the ping pong ball falls off, that team member must start again.

Mystery event! Be prepared for anything!!!

Are you interested in joining one of the nine Panhellenic Council sororities on campus? Do you want to know more about the formal recruitment process in January? Do you want to know what sororities are all about? If so, floor meetings led by your Recruitment Counselors (Rho Gammas) are for you!

 

Rho Gammas are trained upperclassmen students who have disaffiliated from their respective organizations until the end of formal recruitment to offer unbiased guidance, support and resources to help you understand what membership looks like and what to consider. Rho Gammas will lead monthly floor meetings and let you know about any upcoming recruitment events during the fall semester.
