Information on Delta Gamma

On December 19th, the Delta Gamma National Office informed the women in the chapter that the organization was being provided with a 60 day notice of intent to consider the matter of suspending the chapter's charter. What this means is that, in 60 days the chapter's national council will vote to cease recognition at Lehigh. Per the National Office, the Lehigh chapter "has been on some sort of status with the Fraternity since Fall 2005, and in poor standing since March 2011. The chapter has been on 5 statuses with Lehigh University since February 2009." Essentially, the National made the determination that the current culture of the chapter could not be reversed.

Chapter members still present on campus were informed in person that evening by the Delta Gamma National Office, and all members received correspondence from both Delta Gamma and Lehigh regarding the situation.  During the 60 day notice of intent, Delta Gamma may not participate in any chapter or community-wide activities, including Panhellenic Recruitment. This includes all educational, social and community service activities. Chapter members may also not participate in Panhellenic Council or any other activities representing Delta Gamma.

As a fraternity and sorority community, this is never easy news. Over the next few weeks and into the spring semester, my hope is that we as a community support the individual women in the chapter, while understanding the antecedents that led to the decision made by the National Office. OFSA staff will be meeting with the women of the chapter upon their return to campus to further discuss this. Please understand that during this time, no activities on or off-campus should be considered with Delta Gamma. If you are interested in participating in the spring formal recruitment process, please access the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs Homepage ( http://www.lehigh.edu/ofsa/ ) and click on the “Spring 2013 Panhellenic Formal Recruitment Registration” link on the right hand side. Please note that the registration form and payment must be received by 9:00am on Friday, January 4th, 2013. Approved students who meet eligibility requirements mentioned on the Enrollment Disclaimer will be able to move into their residence hall beginning at 9:00am on Sunday, January 6th. If you are moving into a Lehigh University residence hall for the first time, please check-in with the Office of Residential Services by 4:00pm on Sunday, January 6th and follow the directions on all previous correspondences. There will be Recruitment Orientation events beginning at 6:30pm on Monday, January 7th.

 

It is important that you are present at all recruitment events during the week of January 7th to maximize your exposure to the organizations. If you have a special circumstance (i.e. study abroad, athletic commitments, etc.), please contact us as soon as possible upon registration. We will do our best to make sure you have as much contact with the sorority chapters as possible.

 

As we come to the close of the fall semester, the Panhellenic Council would like to remind you not to go into any chapter affiliated facility, whether on or off-campus. You should not be going off-campus with members of any sorority chapter (i.e. lunch, mall, etc.) even if you are invited by an affiliated member. Beginning at 4:00pm on Wednesday, December 19th, you should not have any form of communication with sorority members or alumnae. This expectation has been communicated to the sorority chapters and following this policy is vital to the success of formal recruitment.

Panhellenic Sorority Woman of the Month: Lyndsey Yap

October's Sorority Woman of the month is Lindsey Yap of Alpha Gamma Delta:

Lindsey is currently a senior majoring in biochemistry and is applying to dental schools. For over a year she has been working in a chemistry research lab, and won first place for the Undergraduate Research Symposium for the faculty's choice category. She was the Activities Coordinator her sophomore year and the Vice President of Scholarship her junior year. She is actively involved in our chapter even though she currently does not hold a position. She was the captain of our team to participate in the Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes this year and has participated in the walk the past three years. She has participated in Relay for Life at Lehigh annually in honor of her grandmother who has been fighting lung cancer for the past 10 years. As the treasurer for the Dental Society and previously the activities coordinator, Lindsey has been attending elementary schools to educate children about preventative dental care as well as helping the underclassmen strengthen their skills for dental school. Some other clubs on campus that she has been involved with include the Admissions Ambassadors (previously called Diversity Delegates) and Hip Hop Club. She has been on the Dean's List the past three semesters, and continues to motivate all of the members academically with her accomplishments.

OFSA staff will be working with Phi Delta Theta to begin marketing to our campus community. SERVE Trips

Are you interested in service? The Community Service Office is holding its annual SERVE program over winter and spring break. Over each break, students go across the United States to serve communities in need. This year, we have 1 trip over winter break and 3 trips over spring break.



winterSERVE will be working in North Carolina with Habitat for Humanity from the 6th until the 12th of January. The CSO will arrange for you to stay in your residence hall/chapter house the day prior to the trip so you have time to travel back and settle into Lehigh. There will be 9 students and one faculty/staff adviser. All food, lodging in a local church, and transportation are included in the trip cost.



springSERVE will have 3 separate trips:

Baltimore, MD exploring Urban Poverty issues, Willowick, OH exploring Environmental Issues, and Grand Rapids, MI exploring affordable, LEED certified housing through Habitat for Humanity. Like winterSERVE, the trip cost includes everything on the trip, and there are 9 student spots per trip. springSERVE will run the entire week of Spring Break.

Lehigh/Lafayette Gameday Memo


Message to Campus Community:

 

As you may know last May a tragic alcohol related death of a student occurred at Lafayette College, which has raised the level of awareness about the dangerous consumption of alcohol on campus. Lafayette has been actively engaged in addressing these issues, and we want to make all Lehigh students, alumni and fans who plan on attending the upcoming game are aware of the enforcement efforts and alcohol regulations that will be in effect for game day.

 

Lafayette College will have a significant and vigilant law enforcement presence on and around campus, which will include Lafayette security staff, a private security firm, and uniformed and non-uniformed police officers. Students who will be consuming alcohol are advised to carry identification to prove that they are of drinking age (21 years old in Pennsylvania).

 

Prior to the game, students are expected to follow tailgating policies and procedures. Any student who behaves in a disruptive manner will face criminal and Lehigh University consequences, which may include arrest and immediate suspension from the university. Disruptive behavior includes, and is not limited to: entering the playing field during the game; physical abuse or fighting; actions which are intended to harm others; destruction of property; or behavior that incites others to violence. 

 

Please note that alcoholic beverages are not permitted in Fisher Stadium, or on buses traveling to and from the game. Visibly intoxicated students will not be permitted to ride the buses or enter the stadium, and all spectators will be screened at the entrance.

 

In addition to Pennsylvania state law, Lafayette College will be enforcing their policies as well. Those  policies are outlined below:

 

Tailgating Information:

 

·         All tailgating activities and social events for the day may begin at 10 a.m. and will end when the game begins (1:00 p.m.). Police, public safety officials and security guards will clear tailgating areas (including March Field, Anderson Courtyard, etc.) at this time.

 

·         Lafayette College’s personal carry limit – not personal consumption limit – is defined as two (2) six packs of 12 oz. canned beer, or the equivalent malt beverage or wine (in non-glass containers). No hard alcohol is permitted. One alcoholic drink is 12 oz. of beer or 5 oz. of wine.

 

  • Lafayette College policy prohibits kegs, party balls, and items or games promoting the rapid consumption of alcohol. All alcoholic beverages consumed during the tailgate event must be consumed from plastic cups. No glass containers, handles, cans, funnels, flasks, or similar containers may be the vessel from which alcohol is consumed.

 

  • Students must be 21 years of age or older to drink, possess, or transport alcohol under Pennsylvania law. Students who wish to drink alcohol at the tailgate should be ready to present proper identification to police and public safety officials. Acceptable forms of identification include a valid passport or state-issued ID.

 

  • Those serving alcohol to others at their tailgate are responsible for complying with the legal drinking age and are reminded of the social host liability law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

 

  • Hosting groups are responsible for staffing and monitoring the point of access to alcohol and complying with college personnel, regulations, and Pennsylvania state law.

 

  • All tailgating areas will be patrolled by the Lafayette security staff, a private security firm, and uniformed and non-uniformed police officers and college officials to ensure that fans are tailgating legally, responsibly, and within the allotted time period.

 

  • Students are encouraged to stay hydrated throughout the day. Water stations will be available on March Field and Anderson Courtyard during the tailgating hours.

 

·         Students are reminded to drink responsibly. The college recommends one drink per hour for students who are planning on drinking while tailgating.

Holiday Safety Bulletin from Chief Shupp

With the approach of the holiday season, the Lehigh University Police
Department will be pooling resources with the police department of the City
of Bethlehem to address what is traditionally an increase in burglaries and
thefts of valuables such as cell phones, GPS systems, computers and other
items.

The Bethlehem Police Department has already seen a marked increase in
robberies over the past month, and we expect this to continue through the
holiday season. These are often crimes of opportunity, that is, theft of
property not properly secured. With your cooperation, we can significantly
reduce the chances that you will be affected.

We are assigning more Community Police officers to patrol both the Lehigh
campus and the areas surrounding the campus, and we ask your cooperation by
incorporating common sense safety measures.

The LUPD reminds all members of the Lehigh community to exercise extra
caution and remain vigilant about your surroundings during this time, and
offers the following advice from the LUPD Crime Prevention unit:

- When shopping, park in well-lit spaces as close to the store as possible.
Lock your car, and hide all packages in the trunk or under the seats.
Remain alert and be aware of your surroundings at all times. If carrying a
handbag, keep it as close to your body as possible. Place wallets inside a
coat or in a front pants pocket.

- Hide all valuables in your car, including GPS systems (and any apparatus
that attaches the unit to the windshield).

If you live off campus:

- Keep the exterior of your residence well-lit at night.

- Before leaving for the holidays, register your off-campus residence at
www.lehigh.edu/~inlpd/liv_1.html so that extra patrols can be scheduled in
your neighborhood. Since criminal activity increases over semester breaks,
be sure that your home does not become a target. Always lock doors and
windows. If your property is valuable and portable, take it with you. The
use of light timers is recommended. It is also recommended that you make
arrangements regarding the delivery of mail and newspapers so that they do
not accumulate outside your residence.

- If you notice any suspicious activity in your neighborhood, please report
it to either the Bethlehem Police at 610-865-7187, or the Lehigh University
Police Department at 610-758-4200.

Please keep these tips in mind for a safe and happy holiday season. For

The Gamma Lambda Chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity will present up to three S.L.A.G. Scholarships* to the freshmen men who most closely embody one or more of the qualities found in PIKE’s motto: S.L.A.G. (Scholar, Leader, Athlete, and Gentleman).

After an online application, brief interview, and finalists’ dinner, a committee of diverse and qualified PIKE brothers will select the winners of these $500 scholarships.

Holiday Hope Chest Program

It is that time of year where the holidays are hard for many families in our area. In order to help these families with gifts for their children, we invite you to take part in the Holiday Hope Chest program. In coalition with the Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley, we will be giving Holiday Hope Chests to students at Lehigh’s three afterschool homework clubs. 90% of the students at our homework clubs in South Bethlehem are living at or below the poverty line. By providing gift boxes for these students, we are able to take some of the financial strain off of families in our area during the holiday season.

 

This year we are hoping to fill over 150 Holiday Hope Chests for the students in our homework clubs. If your hall would like to participate, please email inserve@lehigh.edu with how many boxes you will be able to create. We will then provide you with the first names, ages and genders of the children who will be receiving the Holiday Hope Chests your group puts together. For those of you that have participated in the program in the past, please take note that this is a slight change from how the program has been done in the past.

 

The following are some guidelines for the Holiday Hope Chests:

  • Please place your items in a shoebox.
  • Please be sure to wrap the top and bottom of the shoebox separately.
  • Please place only new items in the box that are appropriate for the age/gender of the recipient.
  • Please attach a gift tag to the box with the name of the recipient.
  • Please drop off completed boxes to the Community Service Office in the Garden Level of the University Center by Friday, November 30th at 5pm. 
  • We suggest the total cost of each box be between $15-$25.

Remember to email us at inserve@lehigh.edu as soon as possible if your organization would like to participate! Your contributions make a tremendous to difference to South Bethlehem families in need.

Good Afternoon All,
I hope you all have been doing well over the past few days. We have some important updates, so please read carefully and pass along to all chapter members.
 
1.     With the exception of Delta Gamma, Delta Upsilon, Kappa Sigma, and Sigma Phi Epsilon, power has been restored to all of the chapter facilities. For all the other greek houses, we are permitting a special move in process as of today (October 31) at 2 pm.   You will be permitted to move back in to the residence provided you meet the restrictions below.  For those four chapters still without power you should not return to campus until you hear from us because there is no place for you locate yet.  

 2. The protocol for moving back in will be as follows:
Chapters must have at least five residential members present on campus at the same time between   2 – 6 p.m. today in order for your particular house to be re-opened. Once this group of 5 residents has been identified and they are present on campus ALL FIVE CHAPTER RESIDENTS MUST REPORT TO the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs in the Garden Level of the University Center between the hours of 2-6 pm today. We will need one of those five residents to serve as the official point of contact for OFSA.  IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN FIVE RESIDENTS MOVING BACK IN, DO NOT BRING ALL OF THEM TO THE UC.  WE ONLY NEED FIVE OF YOUR RESIDENTS PRESENT TO OPEN THE FACILITY.  All reporting chapter members must be living in the chapter facility and be able to present identification in order for chapter facility doors to be opened by Access Control. Chapters not opening today can follow the same protocol tomorrow between the hours of 9-4 pm.
 
Once the GROUP OF five RESIDENTS  has been identified and verified in person by Lehigh staff in OFSA, remaining chapter members may move back in as they arrive to campus without notifying OFSA.
 
Lehigh staff and LUPD will be conducting walk-thrus of all facilities on a regular basis over the next few days. IF YOUR OCCUPANCY FALLS BELOW FIVE AT ANY TIME OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS, THOSE RESIDENTS WILL BE EVACUATED FROM THE HOUSE.  WE MUST HAVE AT MINIMUN FIVE RESIDENTS IN A BUILDING TO KEEP IT OPEN FOR SAFETY PURPOSES. Chapter members are expected to keep keys and identification on them at all times.
 
3. MEALS:  Dinner this evening is available 4:30 – 6 pm in Cort Dining Hall / UC for residents at no additional charge.  Beginning tomorrow you may need to be prepared to make food chapter food arrangements or be charged for meals eaten on campus.   
Chapter members must present identification and inform Cort staff as to their affiliation.
 
 4. Due to the nature of the storm, ABM staff  have removed much of the perishable food left in chapter kitchens. In many cases, frozen food has been left for your chef to make a more informed determination on. Please do not risk eating any perishable items that may have been left in chapter facilities, until your chef has assessed the situation.
Please touch base with your food service provider and chapter chef to discuss food shipments in anticipation of resuming regular meals in the chapter facilities as soon as possible.  Please confirm with your Assistant Director once you have a status as to food shipments.
 
5. Lehigh staff have locked off all chapter bedrooms in order to ensure security for chapter members. If chapter members return to campus without a key, they may contact Access Control at x83940 during business hours for a lockout. Otherwise, chapter members will have to wait until regular business hours, or for the House Manager to return.
 
6. Knowing the chapter facilities were most likely left in a hurry, we expect that effort is made upon your moving back in to clean up the facilities and restore them to a condition expected by the Offices of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs and Residential Services.
 
7. Please continue to remind chapter members about following PA State, Lehigh and Inter/National Headquarters laws and policies regarding conduct in the facility. Our expectation is that chapter members will continue to display a conduct that we expect from them, especially as the campus moves forward over the next few days.

Information for On-Campus Residents

On-campus residents, please read the following:

1) If you have not already done so, please go to the link below to register that you are staying on campus throughout the storm:

2) Dining: Rathbone or Cort Dining Room are open for on-campus dining - all other facilities are closed.  Fraternities and Sororities should continue to eat at their chapter houses.

3) Parking and Transportation: If you are remaining in your on-campus residence and have a car on campus, you may park your car in one of the garages on Asa Packer campus even without a permit. The gates are lifted and will remain so through Tuesday.  If the garages are full, you may part your car on Mountaintop campus and take the regular mountaintop shuttle back down to your residence. If you are going to move your car, please do so by 3pm TODAY! After that time, the mountaintop bus shuttle will no longer be running. No bus service is running today, except for the Mountaintop shuttle service which is ONLY running from 11am-3pm.

Assuming weather conditions permit, you MUST plan to remove your car from these locations and park in your normal designated locations by 5pm on Tuesday, October 30th.

4) Please continue to check www.lehigh.edu fand check your Lehigh email regularly for further information. Also, please continue to take general safety precautions including staying inside as much as possible, close your residence windows, carry your ID and keys with you at all times, charge your cell phones fully, etc.

Emergency Registration form update

Good Evening Presidents,

Thank you for attempting to complete the "Student On Campus Emergency Registration Form," as a part of the Hurricane Sandy weather emergency.

In order to complete the form you must access the form through your "@lehigh.edu" email address.  Going through an external email client, even a "@gmail.com" address will not allow you to access the form.  We will not be granting "Requests to Share the Form" with external emails.

Please use the Lehigh Portal or IMP to log in to your "@lehigh.edu" email account in order to complete the registration form.

Weather Emergency Update

Good Evening Chapter Members,

This e-mail is in regards to the Weather Emergency. Please read the entire e-mail, compile all questions, and have one chapter member reach out to your specific Assistant Director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs:
 
1. Per previous updates, all classes and events at Lehigh University will be cancelled for Monday, October 29th and Tuesday, October 30th. This is due to the increasingly severe weather forecast of hurricane Sandy and possible power outages.

2. Students are permitted to stay on campus, but expected to use caution. Students choosing to remain on campus are asked to register at : https://docs.google.com/a/lehigh.edu/spreadsheet/viewform?fromEmail=true&formkey=dEwzQzljSjUwV1h1NmZKM3hJWXk4MlE6MQ

3. If you live in the Residence Halls, or have a meal plan outside of the chapter facility, dining is available tomorrow in Lower UC and Rathbone only. Please continue to check for updates on dining options.


4. If you live in the chapter facility, at this point, you are expected to be taking your meals there. Please work with your alumni, your chef, and your food services provider to inventory both food currently available, as well as the status of your chef to make meals for the next few days. Please update your Assistant Director once who have competed this inventory. Please complete this no later then 9 pm tonight.

5. If you have a food shipment coming to campus either Monday or Tuesday, please take the necessary steps to ensure caution with this shipment. If you currently have sufficient food supplies and are able to postpone these shipments until after the emergency, please consider doing so.

6. Please make sure that you have updated all chapter members and alumni and headquarters leadership as to the situation. OFSA will be sending out various updates, but please be proactive in reaching out to your specific stakeholders.

7. Please also practice caution in both your on-campus facilities, as well all other places where chapter members may be gathering. Please make responsible decisions, and remember that the safety of all students comes first and foremost. This includes not only the approaching weather, but also in the choices made by all Lehigh students during the time that classes are cancelled. It goes without saying that the PA state law, the University Code of Conduct and your Inter/national Headquarters' policies are in effect. You all made us proud last year, and we have no doubt that you will do so again. 

8. At this point, Lehigh expects to return to a normal class and operating schedule on Wednesday, October 31st. We will  post updated information on the Lehigh website at www.lehigh.edu.
